Hugh was born in Islington in December 1934. He is married, has a daughter and two sons and lives in Downton, Wiltshire. He joined the army in 1953 and took early retirement in 1982. He later went on to work for a specialist security company full time and later as a self-employed consultant

Ever since Hugh was a teenager he showed an interest in photography – not the technical side, but the recording of people, events and places. But it was not until 2007 that he began to take photography seriously. By working with the Hampshire artist Pete Gilbert he learned how to look for the picture, composition, depth and tone.

Over the last ten years Hugh has exhibited with Pete Gilbert at Salisbury's Young Gallery, Hangar Farm Arts Centre, Lymington’s St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery, Romsey’s Rum’s Eg Gallery and twice at Lyndhurst Gallery. His work is currently shown at Beaulieu Fine Arts Gallery.

Hugh illustrated 'The Real Aviation Enthusiast' by Bryan Philpott and 'The Real Aviation Enthusiast II' by Peter March. Long ago he used to draw cartoons for the Cyprus Mail and later the Gibraltar Chronicle.
